Armed with a surgical scalpel and scissors, Pennsylvania State University student Maya Evanitsky prepared to collect a patch of skin from a 160-year-old mountain lion—an ancient example of the school’s mascot.

“I was so anxious,” said Ms. Evanitsky, who was hoping to find genetic material on the Nittany Lion sample. “I had no clue whether there was anything in it.”
